Tarot through the decades: the technological evolution of a legendary game

For years, tarot has adapted to technological advances thanks to visionary pioneers. It all began with tarot software on local networks, before becoming accessible through platforms such as the Minitel. With the rise of smartphones in 2007, the game became portable, followed in 2011 by connected solutions using Wi-Fi to enrich the player experience. In 2013, artificial intelligence combined with big data transformed tarot: algorithms learned from human decisions to offer a more immersive and realistic experience. Today, tarot continues to combine tradition and innovation to delight players of all skill levels.

Tarot game rules

The aim of the game is to fulfill a contract by scoring a certain number of points against three players. Each player receives 18 cards and there are 6 cards in the dog. The cards have specific values, and the trumps (the Petit, 21, and the Excuse) are the strongest. During bidding, the taker chooses a contract (Take, Guard, Guard Without, Guard Against) and exchanges cards with the dog. During play, players must follow suit or trump. The Excuse can be played at any time to replace a card. The final score depends on the contract and bonuses earned, such as Petit au bout. In tournaments, scores are compared with those of other players who played the same deal.

Tips to improve your tarot game

To play tarot well, start by evaluating your hand using fictional points, taking into account the strength of your hand and the dog. As declarer, adapt your strategy to your hand:

if it is strong, play trumps to hunt the Petit; if it is weak, play your long suits to keep your strong cards. In defense, try to cut the declarer and prevent them from making Petit au bout. Hunting the Petit is an important tactic, but avoid doing it when you hold two oudlers. Finally, card signaling in defense is essential to communicate with your team about trumps and hands.
